POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITIONS ANNOUNCEMENT

Cooperative Program: NIST Center for Nanoscience and Technology/University of Maryland

TITLE: Research Associate

Applications are invited for postdoctoral fellowships in in the area of fluorescent nanoparticle tracking with feedback control. We are developing real-time feedback methods that enable an experimenter to observe individual fluorescent nanoparticles diffusing and tumbling in a liquid without allowing them to leave the diffraction-limited observation volume of a fluorescence microscope. The feedback control signal reports the particle’s position, while the fluorescence signal is sensitive to other internal and external dynamics such as mechanical deformation (bending), orientation, and inter-particle interactions. This uniquely sensitive measurement tool will have many applications in areas of nanotechnology that utilize non-spherical or non-rigid nanoparticles. The postdoctoral scholar will:
  • Contribute to the design and construction of an experimental apparatus, based on a fluorescence microscope, for three-dimensional tracking of fluorescent nanoparticles using active feedback control.
  • Fabricate fluorescently-labeled polymer nanoparticles, by completing appropriate training and following established fabrication protocols in the CNST NanoFab.
  • Apply statistical methods to understand the fundamental limits of experimental techniques and measurement methods.
  • Report research results, through oral and poster presentations, and by publication in refereed journals.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in physics or a related field, preferably with experience in one or more of the following areas: single-molecule spectroscopy, single-particle tracking, feedback control. For information, please contact Dr. Andrew Berglund (andrew.berglund@nist.gov).

APPLICATIONS:

Applications should then be submitted to the appropriate staff member listed above with a cc to: Alice Mobaidin, mobaidin@umd.edu. The application should include a curriculum vitae (including a list of publications), , and a list of three references.

Additional openings in the program are likely to be available on a continuing basis. Interested parties should review the program web sites (http://cnst.nist.gov/about_res.html and http://cnst.nist.gov/postdoc_cnst.html) .
