Laboratories

Maryland NanoCenter encompasses a wide range of laboratories and facilities for experimentation in nano science and technology, nano-bio research, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), microelectronics, optoelectronics, and related systems. These laboratories, and the individual pieces of equipment in them, are operated in a variety of modes.

Shared Experimental Facilities
Laboratories operated as Shared Experimental Facilities (SEF's) provide equipment and instrumentation are open to serve the research needs for members of the campus community and outsiders. Users may access and use these facilities once safety and equipment training have been completed. User fees are charged to current contracts or other sources of funding.

Instructional Laboratories
Instructional Laboratories are primarily used by students for class and research purposes. The equipment in these labs are usually shared equipment.

Collaborative Research Laboratories
Collaborative Research Laboratories contain research equipment used by individual or joint faculty research groups. Access to these capabilities is by arrangement with the corresponding individual faculty groups, often involving active collaborations. Collaborative research laboratories may contain individual pieces of equipment which are utilized as shared equipment facilities. Thus, some laboratories may contain a mixture of shared user equipment and individual research equipment.

Partner Laboratories
Partner laboratories are off-campus facilities which are available to Maryland NanoCenter researchers under site-specific conditions. UMD faculty are heavily involved in research collaborations with nearly laboratories, particularly government laboratories (LPS, NIST, ARL, NASA GSFC, NRL, etc.), often with significant use of facilities at these laboratories. Maryland NanoCenter's intent is to coordinate and facilitate interactions and facilities sharing with its partner laboratories.
