Research focus areas

The domain of nano science and engineering is enormous, making it important for an organization to focus on a limited number of key areas. On the other hand, the freedom of research in an academic setting opens many paths of inquiry by talented, enthusiastic researchers unburdened by the economic metrics of the industrial marketplace. Given the creativity which can flourish in such an environment, a balance between focus and openness is desireable.

Maryland NanoCenter has identified a number (currently 9) of nano areas in which its current activities are very promising and where a substantial nucleus of interest, expertise, and accomplishment are present. These are shown in the diagram below, which constitutes a work in progress. The research areas are grouped into three broad segments: enabling technologies which make possible advancesin the other two segments; materials systems which realize novel nano properties and behavior; and devices and their manufacturing which can be accomplished with the enabling technologies and materials systems.

In each of the 9 areas below, the subheadings reflect emphases of several strong Maryland NanoCenter researchers. In most cases these groups are already involved in direct collaborations to bring about the cross-disciplinary combinations of expertise needed.
