Navigating the Entrepreneurship Path: What Faculty, Post-Docs and Grad Students Should Know

Abstract
Craig Dye and Martha Connolly of Mtech will give a seminar on entrepreneurship for faculty, postdocs and grad students. They will discuss best practice ways for translation of laboratory discoveries to successful commercial products and companies. They will discuss ways to create linkages with UMB clinical faculty to help design solutions for unmet medical needs. They will highlight resources at UMCP, and in the region for helping get products to market. Examples of recent UMCP successes will be discussed.

Biographies
Craig Dye is the director of Mtech Ventures. Craig oversees the TAP, VentureAccelerator, Start-Up Shell and I-Corps programs. Craig is a serial entrepreneur and seasoned business professional who has extensive experience in guiding start-up creation, customer discovery and business incubation. Craig advises faculty and students on technology development and the start-up process. Craig has experience assessing business opportunities, product and corporate development, market potential and raising capital for technology based ventures. Craig also directs the I-Corps program, advising entrepreneurs in the Mid-Atlantic region. He has acted as a C-Suite advisor to many early start-up companies spinning out of UMCP. Craig recently oversaw the construction of a new prototyping facility in the TAP building, designed to assist entrepreneurs in creating first generation prototypes.

Dr. Martha Connolly is the director of Mtech Baltimore. She is a biomedical engineer and encourages collaborations between engineers and clinicians at UMB. She is a seasoned professional with over 25 years of experience in academic, corporate and government arenas. She teaches entrepreneurship in the life sciences for junior and senior undergraduates in life sciences and bioengineering at UMCP, and graduate students in life sciences at UMB. She has extensive experience in helping faculty and students assess innovative technologies, and create business plans for new technology start-up ventures. She has also judged numerous business plan competitions, and acted as mentor to many local start-up and emerging companies.
