Title: Functional Nanostructured Material Design for Biomedical Devices

Abstract:

Fabricating water swollen systems with tunable nanostructures allows for intelligent and responsive materials with a wide range of applications including color-changing sensors, point-of-care diagnostics, and surgical adhesives and glues. In the first example we demonstrate structurally colored hydrogels that paradoxically collapse and stiffen in response to enzymatic degradation. In the second example, a material-based technique configured into a disposable microfluidic chip was developed to accurately measure blood ammonia from patient fingerstick samples to provide an at-home measurement device to ameliorate management of rare pediatric diseases. In the third example the use of block copolymer hydrogels as an approach to occlusive materials in sealing biopsy tracts. These same block copolymers were investigated for their ability to improve the energy absorption and toughness of poly(ethylene glycol) hydrogels for applications in surgical adhesive design. These studies demonstrate the effective pathways nanostructured, water-swollen multi-functional materials provide in designing simpler and effective biomedical devices.
