Dr. Yi-Feng Su from Oak Ridge National Labs, who is a candidate for the AIM Lab's TEM specialist position, will be giving a special seminar entitled "Application of Electron Microscopy in Materials Science". The seminar will be held in the large conference room (1207 ERF, IREAP Building) next Wednesday (09/04/2024) morning at 11:00am. Please join the seminar and feel free to ask questions and chat with the speaker after his presentation. Refreshments will be served.
Applications of Electron Microscopy in Materials Science
Dr. Yi-Feng Su
Materials Science and Technology Division Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Electron microscopy techniques are crucial for understanding how to engineer micro-/nanostructures that define the properties of materials. When combined with spectrometry, analytical transmission electron microscopy can collect images, diffraction patterns, energy dispersive x-ray spectra (EDS), and electron energy loss spectra (EELS). Analytical scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) offers similar capabilities but is optimized differently for mapping the structure of a specific region at an extremely high spatial resolution. Recent developments in aberration correction have significantly improved electron microscopy's capabilities, providing atomic precision in structural information, single-element composition, and ultimate sensitivity to electronic configuration. In my presentation, I will share my journey into electron microscopy, focusing on my work at Florida State University and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. I will highlight examples of how TEM and STEM enhance our understanding of materials. Additionally, I will demonstrate the advantages and uses of analytical electron microscopy (AEM) through examples where it has provided unique insights into nano-twinned copper, superconductors, corrosion-resistant Mg alloy, and alumina-forming austenitic (AFA) alloy.
