The Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE) at the University of Maryland welcomes Dr. Lingxi Kong as its newest Research Associate. Dr. Kong's expertise in lithium-ion batteries and its supply chain will further strengthen CALCE's research capabilities.

Dr. Kong's academic journey began with a B.Eng. degree in material molding and control engineering from Sichuan University, China 2013. Building upon this foundation, he pursued an M.Eng. degree in material science and engineering at UMD in 2015. Dr. Kong culminated his academic pursuits with a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 2023.

His primary area of expertise revolves around the physics of failure-based failure analysis, with a particular focus on lithium-ion batteries. Dr. Kong's research is an in-situ investigation of lithium dendrite growth and its intricate interactions with a polymer separator in a lithium metal cell. This specialized knowledge has far-reaching implications for developing safer and more efficient battery technologies. Beyond this research, Dr. Kong is an authority in battery supply chain dynamics, battery safety, protection devices, and Lithium-Ion battery testing. His multifaceted expertise positions him as a key figure in shaping the future of battery technology and its applications.

Dr. Kong has made significant contributions through his publications, which can be found at https://calce.umd.edu/published-articles-and-book-chapters. Some examples are below.
