Dr. Eric Wachsman, a Professor in the Departments of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering (ChBE), has been selected to be the 2017 recipient of the Carl Wagner Memorial Award, an honor bestowed by the Electrochemical Society. Dr. Wachsman will be presented with this award during the plenary session of the 232nd ECS Meeting, to be held at the National Harbor in Maryland later this fall. The award comes with a medal, plaque, ECS lifetime membership and travel funds for the annual meeting.  

Dr. Wachsman, a native Californian who completed his Ph.D. in MSE at Stanford in 1990, is the founding and current Director of the University of Maryland Energy Research Center (UMERC). Prior to joining UMD, Wachsman led the development of the Florida Institute on Sustainable Energy at the University of Florida (Gainesville), and was a Senior Scientist at SRI International. He has been published hundreds of time and holds the patents on 8 ionic and electronic transport in ceramics, their catalytic properties, and device performance.

Wachsman's current research includes: solid oxide fuel cells, gas separation membranes, solid-state gas sensors, electrocatalytic conversion of CH4, post-combustion reduction of NOx using advanced ion conducting materials.
