University of Maryland President Wallace Loh has approved the promotion of Edo Waks (ECE/IREAP) to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure.

Waks earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 2003 while working with Professor Yoshihisa Yamamoto in the area of quantum optics and quantum information.  He joined the ECE Department as an assistant professor in the fall of 2006. He oversees the Nanophotonics and Quantum Information Research Group and is a Fellow of the Joint Quantum Institute.

In July, Waks was selected to receive the 2011 DARPA Young Faculty award. DARPA’s Young Faculty Award program, sponsored by DARPA’s Microsystems Technology Office, is designed to seek out ideas from non-tenured faculty in order to identify the next generation of researchers working in microsystems technology. The selected researchers focus on concepts that are innovative, speculative, and high-risk.

He also won the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2010, a National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2009, the Army Research Office Young Investigator award in 2007 and funding for the NanoCenter from both a DoD DURIP award and a NIST award.
